DOI:10.14288/1.0048495. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048495?o=12.  The West Coast logging industry goes back well over a hundred years. This program looks at the history of the West Coast logging industry and what changes are taking place to ensure the industry is sustained in the future. Digitized and available online.

WestLand. What if we stopped clearcutting?. 1999. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT 2160.1/160; Westland_16_01. DOI:10.14288/1.0048431. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048431?o=11.  B.C.’s forest sector, long the major economic driver in the province, is in a state of economic chaos. Whole towns face financial crisis. And in the middle of this, the biggest forest company in the province says it will phase out clearcutting and the logging of old growth forest. Word of these massive changes in forest policy rocked the already shaky forest sector and questions abound. What does this mean for other companies? Will less logging in old growth mean we could be forced to cut second growth too soon? In other words, is this a silvicultural decision or is it based on other factors entirely? This program received a lot of attention from concerned interest groups. The topic of the program discussed how clearcutting was the best way to log in many cases. This program has some wonderful stills showing sites logged, planted and grown over the past 70 years. Digitized and available online.

WestLand. The Cut Goes Down. 1995. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT 2160.1/141; Westland_13_03. DOI:10.14288/1.0048408. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048408. New environmental laws, particularly those contained in the Forest Practices Code, are placing greater constraints on all people working in the woods–especially near water. In addition, more land for parks and other non-timber choices are resulting in less logging, raising uncertain prospects for sustaining the economy–especially in small logging towns. Digitized and available online.

WestLand. Reforestation. 1994. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT 2160.1/130; Westland_11_10. DOI:10.14288/1.0048394. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048394?o=13. Forest land use conflicts still deal mainly with old growth or mature forests but in 1993 we planted the three billionth tree in B.C. How is the “next” forest doing? Are we moving closer to sustainable forestry? Digitized and available online.

WestLand. Old Growth Forests. 1991. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT 2160.1/088; Westland_08_04. DOI:10.14288/1.0048336. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048336?o=4. Much controversy surrounds the logging of old growth forests – particularly on the coast and in certain parts of the interior wet belt forest. The economic and social consequences of logging old growth – or leaving it – are discussed. Digitized and available online.

WestLand. Clearcut Logging and the Environment. 1989. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT 2160.1/075; Westland_06_11. DOI:10.14288/1.0048329. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048329?o=1. Another WestLand public conference. About 200 delegates filled this conference hall in Penticton. They came from all parts of B.C. and even from Alberta. It is apparent that much of the discussion regarding clearcuts is polarized sharply between logging and anti-logging or non-logging interests. The one point on which there seemed to be complete agreement is that some of the older clearcuts were far too large and were made without proper consideration for other resource values. Digitized and available online.

WestLand. Future Forestry. 1991. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT 2160.1/098; Westland_09_02. DOI: 10.14288/1.0048350. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048350?o=5. The Forest Resource Commission has called for sweeping changes in the whole forest management structure in B.C. What impact will these changes have on forest management? Digitized and available online.

WestLand. The Fallers. 1994. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT UBC VT 2160.1/013; Westland_01_13. DOI: 10.14288/1.0048234. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048234?o=4. The most dangerous and highest paid job in the forest industry is that of the faller. Fallers usually work alone and as many as one-per-month is killed in B.C. This program features a National Film Board film on fallers – and a studio interview with the director – himself a former logger. Digitized and available online.

WestLand. Reforestation. 1994. In WestLand Collection. Identifier: UBC VT 2160.1/130 Westland_11_10. DOI: 10.14288/1.0048394. https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/westland/items/1.0048394. Film created by the B.C. Association of Professional Biologists and the B.C. Association of Professional Foresters. Very pro-industry film. Suggests that logging practices are sustainable and responsible.
